Hillsboro Lighthouse
Pompano Beach, Florida
33" High
From 1980 through 1990, I lived and worked less than 2 miles from this light - located about 10 miles north of Fort Lauderdale at Hillsboro Inlet. After a long day fishing or diving in the waters off South Florida, it was always a welcome sight to cruise past this beautiful lighthouse on the way back through the inlet. Built in 1904 for the Great St. Louis Exposition, this light was disassembled and shipped to Florida where it was first lit in 1907. It was just recently relit after major upgrades to the rotating mechanism and the ancient 2nd order fresnel lens is still one of the brightest beacons on the U.S. East Coast. Although not accessible to the general public, I received special permission from the Coast Guard to spend a morning taking photographs from up close in order to build this sculpture. In copper and mounted on light oak base.
