Slow Down; You're In Hope Town!
Elbow Cay Reef Lighthouse
Abaco, Bahamas
32" High 29" Long 17" Wide
If you've ever been to the Abacos, then you will immediately recognize the beautiful Elbow Cay Reef Light which stands sentinel high above Hope Town on Elbow Cay. I have climbed this lighthouse at least 50 times and I never tire of the incredible view from the catwalk - or of the intricate brass mechanism that keeps its ancient first-order fresnel lens turning in its pool of liquid mercury This is one of the last three kerosene-fired, hand wound lighthouses in the western hemisphere. If you happen to be lucky enough to be staying in Hope Town, make sure you climb the light RIGHT before dark. If you're VERY lucky, the lightkeeper will let you help light the mantle.
This big sculpture of copper and brass replicates the stepped, candy-striped appearance of the actual light - right down to the weathervane on top. The palm trees at the base add a tropical feeling to the piece.
Mounted on a beautiful piece of burl oak.
